Most of us think the word racism is synonymous with the word prejudice. But racism is more than just discrimination based on skin color. Its also about who has institutional power. Just as racism creates disadvantages for people of color that make success harder to achieve.
Jodi Picoult wanted to write from the point of view of a Black nurse, a skinhead father and a public defender who is like her and other readers who would never consider their self to be a racist.
The story about an African American nurse who had worked in labor and delivery for over twenty years and then one day a baby's dad asked to see her supervisor. He request that this nurse and those who looked like her not to touch his infant. He turned out to be a white supremacist. The supervisor put the patient request in the file and a bunch on African American personnel sued for discrimination and won.
Ruth- she didnt understand and then it hits her with the force of a blow. They dont have a problem with what have her done. Just with who she is.
Kennedy- they're two types of people who become public defenders, those who believe they can save the world and those who know damn well they cant. First, she was asking by Ruth between the term Black or African American or people of color what she will prefer. Kennedy's answer is she hardly to think of Ruth as Black.
Turk- a father of dead baby. He's very anti with black people because the first nigger he ever met killed his older brother. After his brother died, everything fell apart. His father split and went to live another life. His mother started drinking and she lost her job as a paraprofessional at the elementary school.
